Am I the only one who feels like senior year is just not what everyone bolsters it to be?
Sure you party and have the fun with friends, but I did that last year too.
In fact, aside from massive amounts of homework, ACT stress, and college applications, I don't see much that distinguishes senior year from my previous high school experiences. Perhaps this is because my boyfriend was a senior last year and having spent a lot of time with his group of friends, exposed me to the thrill that is supposed to be senior year when I was just a junior, but frankly I think this common notion of senior year is a case of hyperbole.
To be completely honest, I can't wait for senior year to end. I really just want to get out of here and go to college. Apart of me feels like I am just too grown up for high school. Some of my classmates, even though we attend what is supposed to be one of the best schools in the country, still act somewhere between the ages of 5 and 10 and could not be bothered to get passionate about their senior year education. I kind of feel strange to actually be interested in the foreign policy that took place during WWI or be one of the only students who actually read the novel that is in our syllabus.
At college, it is all different. Students actually take classes they care about, not courses their school forces them to participate in, and therefore they automatically have some interest. Everyone is just older, and consequently wiser with more life experience and less shelter from the outside world.
At college, you are an adult. Free to do as you please, with more opportunity than ever to meet new people and experience new things. In some cases, you are in a city environment, leaving the shores of South Florida behind and adapting to a more edgy surrounding.
Now that sounds a lot better than senior year to me.
I also think these feelings stem from the nature of our education system as a whole. Our high schools have been preparing us for college-level work since at least sophomore year, stressing the importance of enrollment in APs and IBs. Now four years later, I am overly prepared and just ready to move on to the next chapter of my life.
