Recently I learned the true meaning of improvisation. Daily, at my job of a year and six months, I am challenged to think outside the box, and cliché as it may seem, it is a difficult task. My job requirements include: on-the-spot ideas when the original plans are suddenly changed, an 8-hour long smile, a knack for board games and arts&crafts, and lastly, a sacrifice of any vacation time during the months of June, July, and August--my only vacation time.
My job comes with a lot of excitement. It is my responsibility to keep that level of excitement, but also keep it within boundaries for the safety of my customers. That brings me to my next point: the people who keep me with a secured employment during these difficult times--my customers. They are more bizarre than my job requirements. Each and every one of them barely meet the height requirements for even the smallest of theme park rides. Sugar changes their personality almost instantly, even the most meek of them could become a screaming, jumping, hitting, non-laughing little person if even within close proximity of a cookie. Each customer also insists on repeating their requests over and over again if he/she feel as if not heard the first thousand times. Each customer tattle-tails on another (even if it is their best friend) if he/she feels treated unfairly. I should also add that my customers can't cross the street on their own, and need assistance when tying their shoes. Although joviality varies by customer, I have one job to be fulfilled everyday of my employment: I must, under any circumstance, keep them happy and having fun.
My customers are children. I am a camp counselor, and I love my job. I get paid to have fun. However, I'm not here to talk about my job, I'm here to say that there are alternatives to the normal retail jobs that teenagers usually acquire. In retail, sometimes its required to work weekends or even nights, depending on the season. At my job, I only work weekends or nights if I want overtime. Alongside that, depending on experience, there are always opportunities for a raise in salary.
Need a job that keeps you on your feet? Become a counselor. Minimal paperwork is required, and fun is a necessity.
