Okay so let me start off by saying that for better or worse I rarely miss an episode of Gossip Girl.

I've read all the books and I think the T.V. show is pretty good for a lot of different reasons; i.e. I love the fashion and the music that accompanies each episode.
But I can't help to watch the show/read the books and get a little fustrated.
I mean here let us break it down:
Blair is going off to Yale as is Serena and Nate, possibly Brown depending on how the show will portray it.
Dan is Dartmouth (in the show).
I mean c'mon! Do we ever see these characters studying or doing homework? I know that may sound dumb because clearly it is a heightened reality, it's just for entertainment purposes but really a little work here and there to justify the fact that everyone is ivy-bound would be nice.
Granted maybe their wealth gets them into these schools but Dan and Nate are characters who currently lack that monetary appeal.
Bottom line: We like shows that we can connect to and that is probably a big reason why people even tune into the Gossip Girl series. But it is hard to connect to this notion that a college acceptance is just so simple. Just recently I've seen kids with 4.0 GPAs and 34s on the ACT get deferred from these selective schools. Kids who have really worked hard yet no reward for them at the end.
Just something to think about.
