Contemporary dance is rising to the forefront of the dance world. However, contemporary is not "new," rather it is a union of many popular and timeless dance styles. Modern, lyrical, and hip-hop are all ingredients in the modern day fusion of contemporary. When done correctly, contemporary is a style whose every move is a perfect depiction of a note, lyric, or chord; a style whose every move reveals the beauty lying beyond simple movements.
This exact depiction allows the audience to feel something. It is a divine thing to watch a dancer move insync with a piece of music. Choreographers strive to find the perfect balance between fluid and sharp movements so as to keep the audience on their toes.
Perhaps one of today's most famous contemporary choreographers is Mia Michaels. Michaels has recieved Emmy's for her choreography and has become THE choreographer to work with. Florida raised, Michaels has moved on to the most famous show for dancers on television, So You Think You Can Dance.
This show has become the primary way for dancers to truly become famous. It has done wonders for the dance world in its past five seasons, and will continue to do so. So You Think You Can Dance has become a way for America to fall in love with dance again; and not just conventional styles of dance. The Show features: contemporary, hip-hop (it has revolutionized hip hop into various styles), jazz, foxtrot, tango, cha-cha, samba, rumba, waltz, and even bollywood (traditional Indian dance).
So, dancers, get out there! Dance away. You've never done contemporary? No worries, give it a shot, you might fall in love with it, I know I did.

I'm starting to get into that style of dance. Watching "So You Think You Can Dance", it showed me how beautiful it can be. I try to move around them and copy the hand movement...but I guess I need more work to do. lol
