Learning what you love where you'd love to learn it

Attention upcoming juniors and younger:
Thinking about journalism, broadcast, photography, or anything along those lines?
Want to have an amazing week while learning invaluable skills at a breathtaking campus?
Don't mind walking or sweating it out a little?

Go to the University of Florida Summer Journalism Institute next year.

Okay, this really isn't an advertisement of any sort. I promise. But I just returned from the Journalism camp and wanted to share my experiences. First and foremost, I am a diehard Gator girl....who has never been to the University of Florida prior to this visit. When I walked into my Beaty Towers dorm room, (Room 1102 forever!) I was terrified and overwhelmed by the sheer size of the school. However, by the time I checked out today at noon, I fell in love with the campus. It's green and beautiful, large with big brick buildings and semi-decent dorm rooms.

Century Tower - it chimes every 15 minutes...

But besides that....let's get on to what really matters, the journalism skills.

I took the writing class which was taught by Allison Clark, an editor up in Gainesville. I learned how to really write personality profiles and catchy ledes (also the right way to spell ledes...) and got to cover a local event going on at the campus.

We heard from some amazing speakers, including Kristen Harmel from People magazine who was kind enough to autograph her novels (which are really, really good, by the way...)

My autographed novel!

In our spare time, we mattress surfed in the hallways of the dorms and threw impromptu dance parties. We did scavenger hunts and played countless games of the card game spoons (which can be very dangerous). We ate at Gator dining - and let me tell you, you can never eat enough french fries.

But most importantly, you meet people that you become great friends with - even in the course of a few days. And, let me tell you, they love Teenlink up there.

I guess what I'm trying to get across to all you readers is to get involved with the Summer Journalism Institute next year, or look into it, because I'm so, so glad I did.
