Yesterday afternoon, in Coral Springs, an older brother stabbed and killed his younger brother during an argument over the volume of the computer. Last month, a 12-year-old stabbed a 13-year-old in the same area of Coral Springs before stabbing himself. Both these events occurred merely minutes from my own home.

Let's not forget about the poor boy in Deerfield Beach who was set on fire a couple weeks ago after an argument about money.

Now, I've always felt safe and secure in Coral Springs, but lately, I can't believe what has been happening. Three acts of unspeakable violence within the last month; two in my home city. What is going on with today's youth?

What has happened to our generation? Have we really become so heartless and cruel, so demeaning and despicable, that we resort to violence - cruel, unimaginable acts of violence - to justify arguments, to find means to an end?

Where has this stemmed from? Experts cite television and video games. I have to believe there has to be something greater that leads to the burning of a fifteen-year-old; that leads to murdering one's own family member.

Nationally, a fifteen-year-old was gang raped after a homecoming dance as a group of fifteen (possibly more, according to officials) watched, not even bothering to help or call 911.

This is morally wrong. This cannot be how our generation is turning out. We are the ones who will be taking charge soon. Are we going to let this continue? Are we going to raise our own kids in a crime driven, violence induced world where acts such as these become commonplace?

Something must be done, otherwise the violence will simply get worse. I can only imagine in my worst nightmares what the next headline will be.
